Information
A field trial is a competitive event where basset hounds are judged on their ability to find and chase (but not catch) rabbits by their scent. Dogs and bitches compete in separate classes for field trial championship points. Two judges determine the class placements - 1st through 4th place earn points; Next Best Qualifier (NBQ), or 5th place, is also awarded, but no championship points are earned.
Field trials are social events, too, with everyone walking the fields together to help hunt out the rabbits and then sharing meals and stories together.
Pilgrim Basset Hound Club is organizing its first licensed field trial in more than 25 years. AKC recently changed event rules and spayed bitches and neutered dogs may now compete for the Field Champion title. Dogs must be fully registered with the AKC; ILP or PAL registrations cannot participate in this event.
